Gwenyambira Video Interviews

‘Gwenyambira’ is often translated as ‘one who scratches the keys of mbira’ - a praise name reserved for accomplished mbira players.

The videos on this page give you a chance to meet our mbira musicians and learn something more from them.

We start by asking ‘What does mbira mean to you?’ and invite cultural information and further guidance.

Each video is accompanied by a short excerpt, highlight or extra information.

James is an elderly relative of Forward Kwenda’s that lives in Masvingo. During his life he has been a mbira maker and musician, performing twice weekly with his family at Great Zimbabwe - under the name ‘Great Zimbabwe Mbira Group’. His remote homestead sits high up on a neighbouring koppie/kopje (granite hill) and overlooks the ancient ruins. Sadly, James’s sight is deteriorating so he needs help to get around.

James continues to radiate wisdom and grace, and I was humbled by his generosity and patience. Sat by the fire at his house we got talking - this unique video is the result. Forward helps a few times with translations as James tells us about his life with mbira, its function, and the spiritual advice he would like to offer players around the world.
