When Forward left me with Bezil Makombe for our first recording session I wondered how the day ahead would unfold...
Bezil had arranged a peaceful spot for us, and when we finished recording he took me to meet more top mbira players at Lovemore Salari’s place in Chitungwiza.
Word got around about me being there, and Nyamasvisva was soon to turn up - with his big smile.
I was excited to meet this well known gwenyambira, and also to ask if he would record for us. I was even more excited to get a ‘yes’.
We arranged a date that also worked for Japhet Matamba, and recorded both of them together at Nyamasvisva’s home a week later.
Nyamasvisva’s soulful mbira playing was an unexpected blessing.
To get the most value out of our recording time, I always encourage musicians to show as much variation as possible. But Nyamasvisva has stories to tell with his music - and this can’t be rushed.
His songs ebb and flow like lullabies on a swaying boat.
Sat beside Nyamasvisva as we recorded his songs, all my worldly concerns melted away. I hope you also enjoy taking a cruise with him on these beautiful musical journeys.
