Chartwell Dutiro: Legacy

Sadly, Chartwell Dutiro died in September 2019.

Chartwell’s family have kindly given permission for us to enjoy his tuition videos on Mbira.Online.

In return, we invite viewers to donate to Trees of Hope.

Please consider making a donation of any amount to celebrate his contribution to the worldwide mbira community, and support those remaining in his rural village.

Current Trees of Hope projects (July 2021) include regeneration of sustainable woodland and a community borehole that will provide clean drinking water for around 150 people, and support further agricultural projects.

Visit Trees of Hope for more information and to make a donation.

Dindinyongwe is also the home of musician, William Chitauro - His videos are in the post from Zimbabwe as I write this, and should be available on Mbira.Online in the next couple of months!

Also, if you have any recordings of Chartwell that you can share, please let me know.

Before I created Mbira.Online, Chartwell and I had planned to work together on an online mbira learning resource similar to this one. Unfortunately his time came too soon.

Here’s a few interviews we made at his home in Dartington around Easter 2016, just a few months after I first launched Mbira Magic.

Sorry the sound is so quiet (especially in the first video), I wasn’t expecting to interview him. Use headphones!

Video 3 ends with a nice Taireva duet with Chartwell and his favourite mbira maker, Sebastian Pott.

Don’t forget to check out Trees of Hope.
